we all live in manhattan with the top story. >> manhattan has really come back to life in the past two days. people are walking around, taking it all in. people are driving. a couple bridges have

reopened. people are trying to assess the damage. we have power issues. these cars are going smooth here. he will see a bunch of green lights but passed these you will see cops directing traffic. we have 26,000 apartments and three quarter of a million manhattanites with no power. remember battery park city that 13 ft. storm surge that water did rise. eroded all of the park's and subway systems.tonight at 5:00, yorkers will get partial service. mayor

bloomberg just briefed the media. we all understand this is the case across new york. most of these areas are still under water. we have a big mixture here. some parts of manhattan are definitely getting back to normal. midtown manhattan is definitely coming back to life. shelters will continue to stay open. the governors of both new york and new jersey are putting curfews in place. until this all comes together and the devastation it is cleaned up we will not be back to normal.

>> good to see new york beginning to come back after that major storm. >> president obama has already declared a major disaster area and the states of new york and new jersey. the order means federal aid is now available to supplement state and local recovery efforts from hurricane sandy. assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of sandy. >> nearly 200 firefighters battled a massive six alarm fire that destroyed at least 80 homes in queens. the fire swept through the flooded neighborhood of breezy point right on the coast. strong winds fanned the flames causing them to jump from building to building. firefighters used small boats and waded through waist deep

water to get to the fire. three minor injuries have been reported. >> all mass transit in the area remains shut down as well as the three major airports although jfk is expected to reopen today. rescuers brought hundreds of people to safety including some trapped on the roofs of their homes. >> what i expect to see is a devastated jersey shore. we have 2.4 million households without power. >> gov. christie says state officials are working on a contingency plan for next tuesday's election to make sure voters are able to cast their ballots. >> in as a transformer explosion last night at the consolidated edison plant in lower manhattan

knocked out power to thousands of homes. power was shot off in many areas to protect electrical equipment. the company will have to wait for flood water to recede before utility workers can assess damage. >> york university hospital had to move more than 200 patients after the building flooded and lost power. the backup generators only worked for a couple hours. with no power of the staff had to use the stairs to get patients to ambulances outside. they included some sick babies who had to be carried down nine flights of stairs. nurses had to manually squeezed a badsqueeze a bag to help for newborns who could not breathe on their own. >> wind damage a structure

housing the space shuttle enterprise. normally it is shielded by a dome tent at the intrepid air sea and space museum in new york. the structure was torn back and appears to have collapsed. it is unclear whether the shuttle itself suffered any major damage. >> a crane was partially wrecked off the side of an unfinished skyscrapers on west 57th street. it has been dangling 75 floors above ground since high wind toppled it yesterday. with no way to remove it, officials have closed off the surrounding streets and evacuated nearby buildings. mayor blumberg says the building was just inspected friday and he said the crane is stable but cannot be fully secured until the wind dies down. >> sandy not only brought rain and wind, it also brought snow.

there are blizzard conditions in the mountains in five states including the appalachian mountains and west virginia. in west virginia. the u.s. coast guard is continuing to search for the caption of the hms bounty who is missing after hurricane sandy forced them to abandon ship.abandon ship. rescuers saved 14 crew members who were stranded in the atlantic ocean about 90 mi. off cape hatteras north carolina. the ship is a replica built for the 1962 film your money on the bounty. it was also featured in the pirates of the caribbean. . >> it is cold and very windy

officers from waukegan, lake forest, buffalo grove and the lake county sheriff's department. he claims they frame him for crimes until dna evidence exonerated him. >> even in the weeks after his conviction that was clear that drew peterson was wavering and had serious doubts about joel brodsky and his legal prowess. nevertheless, joel brodsky insisted he was not fired and demand will be replacing him as lead counsel agrees. >> he is stepping down today in the best interest of mr. peterson in light of all the of fact and things that have transpired over the last couple weeks. he was not discharged. he

stepped down on his own and i applaud him for that. he did it in the best interest of his clients. >> no one knows the facts and record better than i do and he was concerned by that. we have a situation where unfounded allegations that have been made are interfering with the movement of this case. >> yet another chapter in the drew peterson side up. joel brodsky has been widely criticized for his handling of the drew peterson defense. members of the team had publicly questioned his unorthodox legal maneuvering after peterson's murder conviction last month. jurors said his ill-fated decision to call stacy peterson lawyer to the stand prompted the guilty verdict. he reportedly asked another group of lawyers to take over the expected appeal

sandbagging efforts under way in wisconsin due to the effects of super storm sandy. some residents are forced to evacuate their homes on the shores of lake michigan due to concern about flooding. they are seeking volunteers to help build sand bags because the storm threatens more than 200 homes in the area. volunteers here filling sandbags. they have been doing that since yesterday working through the night. so far no reports of any damage but home owners are concerned. the national weather service is predicting waves up to 14 ft. through the night. officials say waves could pose a flood threat.

some of these homes are very close to the water and do not have the protection of a bluff like many homes here in illinois do. >> wait until you see some of the wind gusts we have seen already. that record storm that went ashore last night ... this is a time lapse view of what went on. some beautiful pictures of our viewers have shot of waves on the lake and so forth. one of them comes from jeff fox in st. joseph michigan. and there was a ring around the moon last night. a lot of pictures submitted about this. that is

the product of high ice clouds blowing off sandy. that gives you a halo of fax. this wind has the effect of building up a storm surge. you see less of the beach in the normally do because waters are high. early this morning and the last couple of hours waves as high as 23 ft. or measured halfway across the lake. a few of these so-called wavesrogue waves give temporary spikes over 30 ft.. wind is driving this. if you take all of that wind energy and transfer it to the lake, you get big swells

that common. this is where the greatest rises in lake level will occur. 69 mi. per hour wind gusts in indiana. chicago is checking in with a wind gust of 54. this storm is about 1,600 mi. across and is producing a patchwork of weather advisories. flood advisories to a winter storm warnings. wind advisories in high wind warnings here around the south and lake shore flooding advisories around lake michigan. it is windy everywhere

out there have been amazing. close to 10 in. in some areas. there is where snow will accumulate. right up the spine of the avalanche in balance. the appalachian mountains. these are all store reports. 16 states are reporting damage from this storm all the way west into the areas around lake michigan because of wind and snow in the mountains southeast. for us, we continue with a lakeshore flood advisory and a high wind advisory down into the lake and northwest indiana. temperatures are nine degrees below normal at 48 degrees today. tonight, mostly cloudy and breezy. a few

follow jimmy on youtube. here's a look at the chicago lakefront being battered by strong winds at this point. that is our live camera view. there you see the big storm. that is sandy and is still centered in pennsylvania right now. there is rain moving into parts of northern indiana as you can see right there. nice weather out in the planes but the whole pattern is kind of blocked. we have several more days of 40 degree

temperatures. 45 at o'hare now. note the shoreline temperature down in the '40's for the first time this season. here is what is ahead in temperatures. going down into the thirties tonight and back up into the '40's tomorrow. factor in the wind and look what it does to a wind chill. even some teens in northwest illinois. there is our upper air pattern which remains pretty blocked right now as sandy dominates. 48 degrees is the forecast for tomorrow.
